Coochbehar is situated in the eastern corner of West Bengal near the borders of Assam. And is renowned for its Rich History as well as for being one of the last independent state of India before merging with the independent India. It is also renowned for its natural beauty surrounding the entire area which is a prime attraction for tourists all over.
Getting to Coochbehar
By Train: At only a distance of 5km from the Coochbehar town centre is the major rail station of Coochbehar. This rail station connects this town with all the major towns and cities of the entire India. Also situated at just a distance of 150 km is the North Bengala’s most important railway station, the New Jalpaiguri Railway station in Siliguri.
By Bus: Siliguri is the major city in the entire North Bengal and as such it has several buses available that will take a tourist to Coochbehar. The buses from Siliguri can go through two routes, one of them goes through Malbazar which while a lengthy road offers many amazing things to view and the second road is a direct and shorter route through the National Highway 31.
Things to see and do in Coochbehar
It is one of the places in North Bengal with a fantastic and rich history. Dating back to almost 11th century, several significant scientific and archaeological discoveries have been made in this place. Due to its rich history, there are several places of interest in this town for the tourists.
Coochbehar Royal Palace
Maharaja Nripendra Narayan built the Coochbehar Royal Palace during his reign in the 19th century. Spread over an area of almost 4700 square meters, this is a magnificent architecture and is a chief tourist attraction. Currently the Archaeological and Geological Society of India have created a museum inside the Royal Palace. Photography is prohibited inside the palace.
Sagar dighi is a famous birding spot in Coochbehar. The Sagar dighi is also surrounded by age old buildings all around it and makes for an excellent photo spot.
Madan Mohan Temple
The Madan Mohan temple in Coochbehar is dedicated to the Lord Krishna. This is the most sacred place and thousands of devotees come to the temple each year to offer their prayers.
Torsa River Bank
The Torsa River flows through this town and as such, the Torsa River bank is an excellent picnic spot as well as an excellent spot to attain the peace of mind.
