A journey of 110 km from Siliguri via Gorubathan or 99 km from Kalimpong will take to one of the most exotic picturesque spot in the Darjeeling Himalayas, Lava. Located at an altitude of approximately 7200 feet, has a beauty that cannot be captured by word. It is also a gateway to the Neora National Valley Park, a Wildlife reserve territory. Although the place is quite visited by tourists but still is left un-trodden. Lava Lolegaon resides in the same vicinity of the area and needs attention of its visitors and be among the mostly visited sites.
Getting to Lava Lolegaon
By Train: The NJP Railway Station in Siliguri connects the city to several cities across India.
By Jeep/Taxi: Get in a taxi going towards Kalimpong. At Kalimpong you will get taxis going directly to Lava Lolegaon which is about 30 km.
By Plane: Bagdogra airport located at Siliguri has several planes available offered by many airlines. Once you reach Bagdogra airport, you can take a taxi ride as described above.
Nature Interpretation Center
Nature Interpretation Center created by the forest department of India to showcase the natural beauty of nature. The Chhangey Falls, a natural waterfall located at a distance of 12 km from Lava are among some of the places to visit.
Lava is surrounded by the natural forests of Pine and Juniper, and is the home to many animals and birds. The conifer forests with its serene environment will make each walk through the forest and create experience to remember.
Lava Monastery is another popular tourist destination. Visit the monastery and see the Buddhist priests praying to Gautam Buddha and be engrossed in their culture.
Sunrise Points: Lava
It has two sunset points here. They are Ghanti Dara and Tiffin Dara. They overlook the valley underneath and is overshadowed by the Himalayan mountain ranges. On clear days, you can view the peaks of the Mt. Kanchenjunga.
Things to See in Lava Lolegaon
It has been one of the known bird watching paradise for many years. The surrounding Pine and Juniper forests makes it an ideal habitat for birds. Rangbang Valley, Upper Rishi Valley, and Neora Valley provides great birding vantage points. Several species of birds can be seen here like Hill Partridge, Tawny Owl, Hawks, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Great Barbet, Golden Throated Barbet etc.
Things to Eat and Drink
Bengali food, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and Nepali food are available here. Of particular note is the Thukpa or better known as Tibetian Soupy Noodles. They are very tasty and deliciously prepared Tibetian food.
