Mirik with an elevation of 1767 meters is a tourist spot located in the Darjeeling hills and was built around the Lake Samendu. It came into prominence around the 1980s. It is famous for its huge Tea, orange and cardamom plantations. The main attraction of Mirik is the artificially created Lake Samendu.
It was constructed during the 1970s in order to promote tourism. The lake also provides paddle boating facilities which is an enjoyable and refreshing activity for the tourists.
Getting to Mirik
By Train: The NJP Railway Station in Siliguri connects the city to several cities across India. If you are journeying from Kolkata, then get in the Darjeeling mail which arrives at 10:00 pm in Kolkata. Once you reach NJP Station, take a taxi ride to Mirik as described below.
By Jeep/Taxi: From Siliguri, Mirik is situated at a distance of 60 km which takes an hour and half to reach from Siliguri.
Generally if you reserve a car like Bolero then driver will take somewhere between 1200 to 1400 also you need to pay for the petrol price up down will be minimum of around 1300. If you roam here & there then few more will be added to the petrol price. So approx it might cost something between 3500 – 5000.
Also if you are going to Darjeeling via Mirik, the journey can take an upwards of three hours. Also if you are already in Darjeeling, then you could take a day excursion to Mirik which would take you one and half hour drive to reach.
By Plane: Bagdogra airport located at Siliguri is has several planes available offered by many airlines. Some of them are:
Air India and Jet Airways has flights from Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata to Bagdogra available, Go Air has daily flights to and from Delhi and Spice Jet operates flights from Kolkata and Delhi.
Once you reach Bagdogra airport, you can take a taxi ride as described above.
A major attraction of Mirik is a large lake which acts as a hidden paradise. The lake on one side is surrounded by the stretches of pine trees which looks wonderful. The deep green color of the trees reflecting in the lake water transforms the lake water turn to greenish.
And the other side of the lake is surrounded by the large green land where tourists are seen spending time strolling and picnicking. A wooden bridge is constructed over the Mirik Lake to allow the tourists cross over to both the sides. Moreover, the lake consists of hundreds of fishes which are being fed by the tourists.
Moreover, there is also provision for paddle boating on the lake which the tourists enjoy greatly.
Mirik is house to eight tea estates. Out of these tea estates, the Thurbo T.E. estate situated at just 2 km distance from the Lake Samendu can be visited with the prior permission and approval of the manager.
Mirik is also house to countless orange orchards and is the largest supplier of oranges to West Bengal. Situated at just 2 km distance from the town one can see the sprawling vistas of orange orchards.
Things to do
Go Picnicking in Rai–Dhap: Rai-dhap is famous as a picnic spot in Mirik. It is situated in the southernmost end of the town with an excellent view of its surroundings. It is highly recommended to participate in picnicking activities here.
Go Paddle Boating : Samendu is a 1.25 km artificially created lake in Mirik. This lake brought the small town of Mirik into prominence. This lake also has an 80 feet long footbridge over the lake. Paddle boating in this lake is a relaxing and is highly recommended.
It is at an altitude of about 1700 metres. Deosi Dara is a superb view point from where one can enjoy a panoramic and 360 degree view of the hills all around.The Mirik town is viewed with bird’s eye from this point. This is the best place for clicking photographs rapidly.
This stunning place is famous for misty mountains, vast areas of tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations and edged by a variety of green trees and shrubs.It is also a pleasure to gaze at the sunrise and sunset from this view point. Tourists coming here can enjoy taking photographs or trekking over the little hills, mountain climbing, bird watching or just leisurely walking down the nature’s path.
Tingling View Point
A spectacular panoramic view of serpentine hill road passing through bright green carpet of Tea Garden. In a clear day visitors can take plenty of snaps here while taking a break during long journey. There is one view tower and one refreshment food stall adjacent to it.
